Erdogan, Putin Discuss Libya Conflict In Phone Call

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed on Saturday the ongoing conflict in Libya with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, state news agency Anadolu said, without giving further details.

Erdogan and Putin spoke by phone and discussed the “crisis in Libya and regional issues,” Anadolu said. The report would not comment on the nature of the conversation.

The phone talk comes hours after Erdogan met in Istanbul Fayez Serraj, the head of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), based in Tripoli and backed by the United Nations.

In a meeting late Friday, Erdogan reaffirmed Ankara’s support for the “legitimate” government of Serraj, according to Anadolu.

Erdogan called on Khalifa Haftar, the head of the rival Libyan National Army (LNA), to cease his attacks.

The self-styled LNA, which accuses Turkey of providing military support to the GNA, last week announced a ban on flights between Libya and Turkey.

It said Turkish ships and aircraft were “legitimate targets” for its forces. On Monday, Haftar’s forces freed six Turkish citizens after Turkey threatened action.

Haftar is thought to be receiving support from Russia while Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are believed to be his main allies.

The Serraj government is thought to be supported by Qatar and Turkey.
Haftar had ordered his forces to capture the capital in April and violence has escalated since with neither side able to make substantial progress.

The GNA blamed Haftar for an airstrike on a detention centre near Tripoli that left scores of people dead or injured on Wednesday. (dpa/NAN)

Breaking: Buhari signs AfCFTA agreement

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday signed the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

He gave the endorsement in Niamey, Niger Republic, making Nigeria the 53rd state on the continent to append its signature to the document.

Buhari signed the agreement around 10.48 am local time, as the first event at the opening of the 12th Extra Ordinary Summit of the African Union on launch of the Operational Phase of the AfCFTA.

The President had delayed in signing the agreement to give room for extensive consultations with stakeholders.

The Presidential Committee on Assessment Impact and Readiness had submitted its report last week.

The committee had recommended that Nigeria should sign the agreement.

Twenty four countries have already ratified the AfCFTA which is expected to be the world’s largest free trade area since the formation of the World Trade Organization with a potential market of 1.2 billion people and a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $2 5 trillion, across all 55 member states of the African Union.

Community policing: FG, governors to recruit N-Power cadets, corpers

The Federal Government and governors under the auspices of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) have proposed to recruit N-Power cadets whose two-year service is coming to an end or youth corps members to boost the manpower of the Nigerian Police Force.

Also, President Buhari has directed governors and the nation’s security chiefs to work out the modalities for the suggested takeoff date as well as draft plan of action. Briefing State House Correspondents after a meeting with the President, Chairman of NGF, and Governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi, said both parties felt the recruitment of 10,000 policemen was necessary to tackle the dearth of security operatives in the country.

Fayemi, said he briefed the President on the outcome of the security committee of the National Economic Council which reviewed concerns, issues around security and the proposed reactions on those. Fayemi said President Buhari “commended the National Economic Council (NEC) for paying special attention to security and he also urged the NEC committee to work with the security chiefs who have already briefed him during the security meeting on Thursday.

Messi sent off as Argentina beat Chile to win Copa America bronze

Lionel Messi was sent off following a clash with defender Gary Medel in the 37th minute of Argentina’s 2-1 Copa America third-place playoff victory over Chile on Saturday.

The straight red card marked the first time the Barcelona forward has been sent off in a senior game for club or country since his debut with the national team in 2005.

With Argentina up 2-0, Messi put in a hard challenge on Medel who was shepherding the ball out of play.

The two players then aggressively bumped chests a number of times before the match referee intervened and immediately flashed reds for both.

Confusion ensued, with players from both teams surrounding the referee. But moments later, Messi and Medel walked off the field.

Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala had scored the goals for Argentina.
Arturo Vidal converted a penalty for Chile just after half-time.

Hosts Brazil face Peru in the final on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro. (ESPN)

NAPTIP Launches Sex Offenders Register To Name And Shame Rapists

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, (NAPTIP) has announced plans to launch a sex offender register to name and shame rapists and offenders of other forms of violence against persons.

According to the Director General of NAPTIP, Julie Okah, the implementation of the register is aimed at putting an end to all forms of violence against persons in private and public life, and to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment of offenders.

“The spate of this mindless abuse of children, rape and other forms of violence against persons has assumed an alarming dimension and concerted efforts must be made to minimise the development.

“By the end of this month (July), we are going to be launching the sex offenders register. This register is going to name and shame all the rapist in Nigeria.”

She intimated of plans to share information gathered through the register to embassies, companies and the general public, in a bid to pass a strong message to potential offenders.

“We are also going to share the information with all the embassies, offices where people are likely to apply for jobs, sensitive offices where rapists and paedophiles should never be seen working.

“At the time we begin to name and shame them, I believe that it will send a strong message to those who are planning to rape and they will desist from that heinous crime.”

Mrs Okah said that these crimes can be prosecuted irrespective of the time; she urged rape victims to speak up and get their offenders punished.

Ruga: Don’t heat up the polity, Arewa Consultative Forum warns

Godwin Isenyo, Kaduna

Following the suspension of the Ruga programme by the Federal Government, the Arewa Consultative Forum has cautioned Nigerians against heating up the polity.

Specifically, the pan-Northern body said all Nigerians irrespective of their positions, should restrain from taking decisions that are inimical to peace and unity of the country.

The ACF through its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Ibrahim-Biu in a statement in Kaduna on Saturday, also noted that it shared the concern of the Coalition of Northern Groups, who gave the Federal Government, an ultimatum to reverse its decision on Ruga.

The Forum said, “The Federal Government has put on hold the Ruga Settlement program, that it was inconsistent with the National Livestock Transformation Plan approved by the National Economic Council.

Moreover, the program was designed as a voluntary (project) for willing state governments. Arewa Consultative Forum, therefore, urges all concerned to exercise restraint in taking actions that may be inimical to peace and stability in our polity.

“ACF also shares the concern of the Coalition of the Northern Groups on the plight of genuine herdsmen in pursuit of their livelihood in some parts of the country.

“ACF therefore appeals to government to institute measures that would ameliorate the suffering of not only herders but all those involved in the value chain of livestock production.”

BREAKING: Nigeria Defeat Cameroon To Clinch AFCON 2019 Quarter Finals Spot

Nigeria’s forward Odion Ighalo celebrates his second goal with teammates during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) Round of 16 football match between Nigeria and Cameroon at the Alexandria Stadium in the Egyptian city on July 6, 2019. JAVIER SORIANO / AFP

Odion Ighalo scored twice and teed up Alex Iwobi’s winning goal as Nigeria eliminated defending Africa Cup of Nations champions Cameroon after a thrilling 3-2 victory in Alexandria on Saturday.

China-based forward Ighalo bundled home a scrappy opener but Clarence Seedorf’s Cameroon hit back through Stephane Bahoken and Clinton Njie with two quick-fire goals before half-time.

Nigeria drew level as Ighalo volleyed in his second just past the hour and he then turned provider to play in Iwobi to steer home three minutes later and set up the prospect of a highly anticipated quarter-final clash with hosts and favourites Egypt.

Seedorf’s penchant for change has seen the former Dutch star heavily rotate his Cameroon side in Egypt, with Karl Toko Ekambi dropping to the bench here and 2017 player of the tournament Christian Bassogog recalled along with Clinton Njie in a bid to breathe life into a faltering attack.

Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr paid the price for resting key players in the shock 2-0 loss to Madagascar, with Wilfred Ndidi, Kenneth Omeruo, and Alex Iwobi all returning to the starting line-up.

The Super Eagles eliminated Cameroon in the first knockout round the last time they were reigning champions in 2004, and their bid to repeat history looked on when Ighalo nudged Nigeria ahead with a scrappy opening goal after 19 minutes.

Moments after Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui powered a header over at the other end, Peter Etebo hooked a deep cross to the far post where it was driven back across goal by Omeruo and Ighalo stabbed home via a huge deflection that wrong-footed goalkeeper Andre Onana.

It was the first time Cameroon had conceded in Egypt, but after scoring just twice in three group games the Indomitable Lions matched that output in three frenzied minutes before half-time.

Bahoken pulled Cameroon level on 41 minutes when he ghosted in behind Omeruo to connect with a terrific whipped cross from Bassogog, and Njie soon fired them in front after outpacing Ola Aina to a flick-on, holding his nerve and balance to slip beyond Daniel Akpeyi.

Njie nearly got the better of Akpeyi early in the second half, Nigeria ‘keeper superbly clawing the ball out from just inside his post after the Marseille winger’s cutback was deflected towards goal.

Rohr introduced Samuel Chukwueze with an hour gone but it was Ighalo, the top scorer in qualifying, who came to the rescue once more with a thumping finish after Ahmed Musa chested a cross into his path.

Ighalo joined Senegal star Sadio Mane on a tournament-leading three goals and he played a key role in Iwobi’s decisive strike on 66 minutes, threading the ball through to the Arsenal winger to side-foot past Onana.

Ngadeu-Ngadjui toed wide at a corner but Cameroon struggled to threaten Nigeria in the closing stages with Ighalo denied a hat-trick late on as Onana plunged low to his right to knock away the forward’s header.

Climate change: Trees 'most effective solution' for warming

Researchers say an area the size of the US is available for planting trees around the world, and this could have a dramatic impact on climate change.

The study shows that the space available for trees is far greater than previously thought, and would reduce CO2 in the atmosphere by 25%.

The authors say that this is the most effective climate change solution available to the world right now.

But other researchers say the new study is "too good to be true".
The ability of trees to soak up carbon dioxide has long made them a valuable weapon in the fight against rising temperatures.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said that if the world wanted to limit the rise to 1.5C by 2050, an extra 1bn hectares (2.4bn acres) of trees would be needed.

The problem has been that accurate estimates of just how many trees the world can support have been hard to come by.

This new report aims to show not just how many trees can be grown, but where they could be planted and how much of an impact they would have on carbon emissions.

The scientists from ETH-Zurich in Switzerland used a method called photo-interpretation to examine a global dataset of observations covering 78,000 forests.

Using the mapping software of the Google Earth engine they were able to develop a predictive model to map the global potential for tree cover.

They found that excluding existing trees, farmland and urban areas, the world could support an extra 0.9bn hectares (2.22bn acres) of tree cover.

Once these trees matured they could pull down around 200 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide, some two-thirds of extra carbon from human activities put into the atmosphere since the industrial revolution.

This is a quarter of the overall amount of CO2 in the air.

"Our study shows clearly that forest restoration is the best climate change solution available today and it provides hard evidence to justify investment," said Prof Tom Crowther, the senior author on the study.

"If we act now, this could cut carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by up to 25%, to levels last seen almost a century ago."

The researchers identify six countries where the bulk of the forest restoration could occur: Russia (151m hectares), US (103m), Canada (78m), Australia (58m), Brazil (50m) and China (40m).

But they say speed is of the essence because as the world continues to warm then the potential area for planting trees in the tropics would be reduced.

"It will take decades for new forests to mature and achieve this potential," said Prof Crowther.

"It is vitally important that we protect the forests that exist today, pursue other climate solutions, and continue to phase out fossil fuels from our economies."

The new study has been welcomed by Christiana Figueres, former UN climate chief, who was instrumental in delivering the Paris climate agreement in 2015.

"Finally an authoritative assessment of how much land we can and should cover with trees without impinging on food production or living areas," she said in a statement.
"A hugely important blueprint for governments and private sector."

What do the critics say?

However not everyone was as effusive about the new study.
Several researchers expressed reservations, taking issue with the idea that planting trees was the best climate solution available to the world right now.

"Restoration of trees may be 'among the most effective strategies', but it is very far indeed from 'the best climate change solution available,' and a long way behind reducing fossil fuel emissions to net zero," said Prof Myles Allen from the University of Oxford.

Others are critical of the estimates of carbon that could be stored if these trees were planted.

"The estimate that 900 million hectares restoration can store an addition 205 billion tonnes of carbon is too high and not supported by either previous studies or climate models," said Prof Simon Lewis from University College London.

"Planting trees to soak up two-thirds of the entire anthropogenic carbon burden to date sounds too good to be true. Probably because it is," said Prof Martin Lukac from the University of Reading.

"This far, humans have enhanced forest cover on a large scale only by shrinking their population size (Russia), increasing productivity of industrial agriculture (the West) or by direct order of an autocratic government (China). None of these activities look remotely feasible or sustainable at global scale."
The study has been published in the journal Science.

Your apology insincere, Kate Henshaw tells Senator Elisha Abbo

Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw has dismissed the apology offered by embattled Senator Elisha Abbo over the assault of a nursing mother at an adult toy shop in Abuja, as insincere.

The actress, who took to her verified Twitter handle @henshawkate to express her mind on the apology, said it was irrelevant.

“Your supposed apology smacks of arrogance, Elisha Abbo! You said, “No matter what she did to me”. What did she do except tell you to take it easy? Your supposed apology is very insincere.

“You were caught in your own lie. You went to prepare a robust response and came back with this hogwash of an apology.

“We must as a people see things to a logical conclusion. Examples must be made, impunity in any form, from anyone, is unacceptable,” she said.

Abbo, at a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, apologised to the nursing mother he assaulted at an adult toy shop. The incident was captured by the surveillance camera in the shop and has now gone viral.

The senator who represents Adamawa North claimed that he has never been known or associated with assault in the past.
